Surrey Street - Infant Health Clinic and heritage

30 August 2019

The Town of Bassendean is investing in the next generation by building a new infant health clinic in Surrey Street, while restoring the Pensioner Guard Cottage and residence.

The project, in partnership with WA Health, will provide up-to-date facilities for the 997 children aged newborn to five in Bassendean and their parents.

The clinic is scheduled for construction in 2020, with a breastfeeding room, toilets for chldren, a playground, kitchen, consulting rooms and a community space for hire.

It will replace the James Street clinic where several generations of babies have been measured, immunised and weighed.

At the same time, the Town of Bassendean has partnered with LotteryWest to restore the 1893 residence next to the Pensioner Guard Cottage, to become an interpretive centre to highlight and promote the history and heritage of Bassendean.

Restoration works are also planned for the Pensioner Guard Cottage, built in 1856 -- paying homage to its role in Bassendean’s pioneering days and as a home to a large family.

About the project

The land is zoned for residential purposes and under the provisions of the Local Planning Scheme No. 10, the Town is required to advertise the proposal to people who could be affected by the proposal prior to determining the application.

The proposal involves:

  • Restoration of the Pensioner Guard Cottage
  • Alterations to the 1893 residence for community purposes (including history and heritage interpretation space, arts and crafts, community groups and a community space for hire)
  • Demolition of the rear of the existing residence and the construction of a new building to the rear of the site for a Child Health Clinic with two consulting rooms, a waiting area, kitchen and play space
  • Change of use from residential to community use.
