NOTICE OF INTENTION TO LEVY DIFFERENTIAL RATES AND MINIMUM RATES

At the Town of Bassendean, we're proposing to change the way we apply rates to property, particularly in relation to vacant land. You are invited to provide comment in writing by noon, Monday 15 July 2019.

In the past, Council has applied an identical rate in the dollar to all properties, calculated on Gross Rental Valuation (based on property values supplied by the Valuer General).

Proposal
For the first time this year, Council proposes to introduce two categories of rating – one for vacant land and one for all other property. This varied approach to rating is referred to as “Differential Rating”.

The usual amount may change when we send out rates notices in August/September 2019.

The proposed rates are:

Rate category (GRV)
Rate in dollar
Minimum rates
Vacant Land
14.50 cents
$2,100
All other property
7.302 cents
$1,106

Reasons
The higher differential category for vacant land reflects the Town of Bassendean's obligations to maximise the per capita use of infrastructure and avoid unused spaces around the district by encouraging development of these vacant properties that will in turn stimulate growth, vibrancy, safety and development in the community.

The complete statement of Objects of, and Reasons is available here. They were adopted for advertising at a Special Meeting of Council on Tuesday 18 June 2019. They are also available for inspection at the Town of Bassendean Administration Office, 35 Old Perth Rd, Bassendean between 8:30am and 5pm Monday to Friday.
